Quantifying the ‘press and peel’ removal of particulates using elastomers and gels

Elastomers and gels have been proposed for the gentle ‘press peel’ cleaning of soil or grime from substrates cultural and/or historic significance. However, there has limited understanding that connects physical chemical properties these soft materials to required removing adhered particles surfaces. In this work, we quantified efficacy a range elastomers hydrogels in order probe effects material chemistry, elastic modulus, thickness, number repeated treatments on removal artificial substrate. We developed quantitative measure via simple experimental method relies image processing interface prior after particulates. The results suggest are two requirements must be satisfied successful cleaning: 1) efficient contact with particulates substrate 2) favorable interactions facilitate their removal. Cleaning is enhanced by decreasing effective stiffness material.
